Courses for 14-16 year olds

14 + Newsletter Winter 2011/2012The Personalised Learning Programme (PLP) was introduced by the Government in 2001 to encourage schools & colleges to work together to provide a wider range of options for 14 – 16 year olds and thereby raise levels of achievement.

Here at Runshaw College we offer a range of vocational qualifications ranging from National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) to Extended Certificates.

NVQs are designed to assess students doing particular jobs in specific areas. NVQs are helpful for students who want to demonstrate that they are good at a particular job and get qualifications that recognise work they are already doing.

Extended Certificates allow students to apply theory in a vocational area (or general field of work) and will be assessed by coursework in areas such as Health & Social Care & Engineering.

A formal application process will be followed involving both the school and the Training Provider. Successful candidates will be offered a place. The deadline for all applications is Friday 30th March 2012. Selection Criteria will depend on the training provider and level of qualification. For Runshaw Training, pupils will be required to attend an interview with their prospective employer before September to secure their placement.

Attendance is very important to ensure that students work hard to achieve excellent rates of attendance throughout the course. Attendance will be closely monitored by the Training Provider and will inform the schools of any concerns.

Health and Safety is also extremely important. When a pupil begins their course in September, their tutor will go through the Health and Safety policies that apply to the area in which they will be working. To ensure the welfare of everyone, students are required to obey Health and Safety rules.

In terms of transport some students will travel independently to and from the college, training provider or their place of work to attend their course. Some students will be transported via minibuses belonging to the schools but the majority of students will either walk or use buses. Individual schools will have their own policy on transport.

All details of the courses on offer for September 2012 are on pages 6, 7 & 8 of the 14+ Newsletter.
