
Over the next two years you will have the opportunity to take part in a number of different enrichment activities. These will increase your enjoyment of your studies and equip you for further success.
There are over 50 activities to choose from so here is a brief outline of each...
CHEERLEADING
Cheerleading is a sport that uses organised routines made from elements of some tumbling, dance, jumps and stunting to direct the event's spectators to cheer on sports teams at games and matches and/or compete at cheerleading competitions. So come and join us!
FIVE A SIDE FOOTBALL
This is available for all to participate in leagues and tournaments, with medals and cups for winners. A chance for tutor groups to form teams or groups of friends to play together, but if you are not part of a team come along and join in – you soon will be! Enjoy this fast paced game on state of the art all weather surface.
CHINESE LANGUAGE FOR BEGINNERS
Learn how to introduce yourself and family introductions, say a little about yourself, order drinks and a meal, ask for directions, getting around on public transport – all you need for a visit to China!
SOCIETIES & CLUBS
Why not set up your own society or group – where you can work as an action group tackling topical, ethical and environmental issues, e.g. 'Fair Trade', 'People and the Planet' etc.
DEBATING SOCIETY
Have your say on the debates that matter most!
CHRISTIAN UNION
A dynamic society that brings like-minded people together to discuss issues and worship.
MEDIA
Magazine Club – for those with an interest in magazines, newspapers or journalism

RUNSHAW RADIO WORKSHOPS
Want to have a go at being a radio presenter, reading the news and playing your favourite tunes? Or learn about the technical details in running a radio station? Well, book onto the college Radio Enrichment Workshops.
BAND
Do you play any woodwind instrument, drums or bass guitar? In the college band you will have the opportunity to perform a wide range of music from jazz to popular music.
CHOIR
All are welcome at choir if you are a serious singer or a complete beginner; covering a range of styles and participating in performances here at the college and throughout Lancashire.
ROCK MUSIC WORKSHOP
Designed for students already playing an instrument or singing: a 40 weekly session with a professional rock musician, collaborate and develop your rock music skills.
PERFORMING ARTS:
Acting Workshop
LAMDA exams – work towards exams in Bronze, Silver and Gold and obtain a medal at the end
College Productions - ranging from musicals to Shakespeare
Directing Project - direct a short play/extract of a play and see your piece performed, actors also needed for this project
Dance Club - for all wannabe dancers and cheerleaders!
Choreography Workshop - for students with some dance experience. Learn dance techniques in a range of styles; create performances for yourself and others. Learn basic principles of choreography and work towards regular performances
POPULAR MUSIC THEORY
Learn more about the theory of music at any level, read music more fluently, pass exams, perfect your technical and theoretical knowledge.
CHAMBER CHOIR
A more specialised choir for those with more musical experience. For those wishing to be part of an intimate musical group you can check out the following:

Creative Textiles – you can learn feltmaking, experiment with sheer and soluble fabrics, transfer painting, hand stitching and cutwork appliqué, all taught by a professional external textile designer
Screen Printing - produce exciting and colourful images of your choice, ideal for students doing Photography, Fine Art, Graphics or Textiles to extend and enhance your course work
Drawing - improve your drawing skills; use a range of media including charcoal, pencil, graphite, ink and pastel
Life Drawing Skills - working with a professional model, improve on your established skills using traditional and contemporary working methods; also develop an understanding of how famous artists gain their knowledge from life drawing
CREATIVE WRITING
Learn the skills of becoming a creative writer: let your creativity run wild!
COMPUTING AND GAMES
Networking – create a home network, wireless network and share files and folders. Create your own networking cables and understand network securityComputer Gaming - take part in computer gaming against your friends using a variety of PC games across our custom built mini-network
SIGN LANGUAGE
Learn the basics of sign language, improve your communications skills and offer a different skill. Courses run in six week blocks throughout the year.
FIRST AID
Learn basic life saving skills on this short course and gain a recognized certificate of competence. Courses run for half a day throughout the year.
COUNSELLING SKILLS
If you're thinking of working in the caring professions, attending this course could make your CV stand out from the crowd and you'll have fun along the way! Courses run in six-week blocks throughout the year.
SPORT
Football, Hockey, Rugby, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton - for anyone who wants to have a go at being in a team, for fun or even playing in matches at home and away
Conditioning - resistance training, cardiovascular work and flexibility exercises
Trampolining - learn how to trampoline and stay fit at the same time
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
If you are interested in pursuing outdoor activities ranging from mountain biking to rock climbing to cycling fitness, then register your name and take part in something different.
Duke of Edinburgh - take part in the internationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh Award, which is well regarded by universities and employers. Attend the information sessions at the beginning of term
Caving - this one-day course will allow participants to navigate through several famous 'Pot Holes'; you will cover selection and use of equipment. All the kit will be provided and the course is suitable for complete beginners and those with experience
Survivor Days – a short course covering leadership, team working and problem solving using a range of outdoor scenarios; increase your personal development and interpersonal skills
Snorkelling - this practical one-day course covers the selection and use of equipment/snorkel and diving techniques; follow the British sub aqua club snorkel diver syllabus leading to certification; cover a range of techniques, health and safety and rescue drills and the possibility of trying a scuba dive
Skiing - skiing and snowboarding trips and tuition for beginner and advanced, visiting Rossendale dry ski slopes, Scotland and possibly abroad later on in the year
Mountain Rescue Course – based at Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Base at Dunsop Bridge; take part in a search and rescue exercise in the Forest of Bowland; learn how to co-ordinate searches, use radios, conduct emergency procedures, casualty evacuation and helicopter landing site management. This is suitable for all abilities
Climbing and Abseiling - a practical course covering climbing/abseiling skills, belaying/rope work, selecting and fitting equipment and climbing safely. Suitable for both beginners and experienced. The course will take place both indoors (Climbing wall) and at a local crag – subject to weather
SOCIAL EVENTS/CHARITY/FUN ACTIVITIES
Runshaw College is renowned for its 'sell out' social events ! These include the 'Freshers' Party' in September, (a chance to make new friends), the 'Christmas Tree Ball' in December and a 'Leavers Ball' in May to provide a great opportunity for you to mark the end of your time here at Runshaw.
Runshaw adopt a charity each year and we organise lots of events throughout the year to support this and have fun, e.g. Ice Rink, Easter Activities, Lunchtime Disco's, Chill week, Children in Need, Breast Cancer Awareness, Make Poverty History and many more!
HOW TO ENROL ONTO AN ACTIVITY
The programme of Enrichment activities is continually developing and at enrolment you will be able to register your interest in the activity of your choice and pick up some information. At the beginning of term we hold 'Freshers' Festival' when you can try out activities and enrol. Details of new activities will be advertised at the Freshers' Festival and throughout the year.
Some courses run weekly for the whole year. Some are block courses that only run for a few weeks but may be repeated several times during the year. Some outdoor activities/courses run just for a day.
HAVE YOUR SAY
You have an opportunity to represent your tutor group on the Personal Tutor representatives' group. You could also become a member of the Student Council.
The Student Council is the voice of students from across the sixth form college. Its members represent the views of students to staff as well as working closely together as a team on many cross college activities and issues such as the Freshers' Party, the annual Leavers' Ball and Christmas Tree Ball, charity events and student welfare. If you would like to be more closely involved with college events and activities and have your say then there are excellent opportunities to do so.
