What's in it for me?

There are many ways in which studying can enhance your life. There is the sheer pleasure and fulfillment of tackling a new challenge, the new confidence you can find in your own abilities and not least the feeling that your mind is fitter for its efforts. You will also meet new people, gain valuable new skills and pursue a leisure or academic subject that you may have always been interested in.

GETTING THE EDUCATION YOU MISSED THE FIRST TIME ROUND.
You may have missed out on education in your teenage years. Now you have the chance to change all that. A qualification, even one for leisure, usually improves both your chances of obtaining a fulfilling job and increasing your earning potential.

A NEW DIRECTION
You may have reached a career dead-end - or just want a new direction. Maybe you want the chance to get into the work you really want to do rather than something you've drifted into. A relevant qualification is usually essential to gain entry into a new profession.

POWER UP YOUR CAREER
If you are happy with your life but want to go further within it, some continuing education qualifications can make all the difference.

AEROBICS FOR THE BRAIN!
Studying won't just fill your head with facts, It will make you mentally fit, sharper and a more capable and confident person. Even if you don't use your new skills for career prospects it will still change your life for the better.

KEEP UP WITH THE JONES
Well, maybe not the Jones but when the kids ask you to help with their Algebra or show them how to search the web - will you be able to?

THE WOW FACTOR
Give yourself the wow factor - increase your knowledge, skills and experience and watch your self-confidence increase ten-fold.

MEET PEOPLE
It doesn't just have to be about the new things you will learn, college is an excellent way to meet people and make friends.

GET YOUR LIFE BACK ON TRACK
Maybe you have suffered debilitating stress or trauma; we will support you in rebuilding your confidence and self-esteem.

Can I do it?

It's not 'can I', but 'do I want to'. There are many aspects to consider in the decision to return to college, but the most important is your motivation: if you want to do it, you can do it.

Even if your high school or early college performance was less than fantastic you can succeed as an adult student. As an adult, you have the advantage of motivation and maturity that you may have lacked as a teenager. The adult education classroom environment is also very different from school with its emphasis on studying on your own, flexible class times and a curriculum that draws upon your life experiences.

Starting a course is a commitment. Particularly on a longer course, you may have to juggle personal, family, and job commitments at the same time. However, the confidence, personal development and skills you will gain from your course outweigh any sacrifices.

If you are unsure or worried you might bite off more than you can chew, speak to our course enquiries team. They may be able to suggest a more suitable route or point you in a direction you hadn't thought of.

Will there be people the same age as me on my course?

More than likely. We attract students from all age ranges and a real mixture of backgrounds and experience. It all adds to the 'flavour' of life here. For example, on our beauty therapy courses, students range from school leavers to the more mature 75 year old! We are a progressive college and provide a modern yet adult environment in which to study.

And if you think you are too old? Definitely not. If Verdi could compose operas in his late 80s and Einstein be equally active in his 70s, there is no doubt that creativity and brainpower, like good wine, can mature with age! We know from experience that mature students are highly motivated and extremely successful in achieving their goals.

How do I choose what to study?

Subjects that you are genuinely interested in and motivated enough to want to study are the obvious factors. With these two firmly under your belt, you are much more likely to succeed. The course enquiries team can help you with issues such as styles of teaching, methods of assessment, location, fees, cost of materials and times to make sure they fit in with your needs. They can also ensure that a course will give you the right qualification or is at the right level.

I already have a qualification; how do I progress?

The college places great emphasis on creating structured routes for progression and you will always be advised at the start of your course on opportunities to continue your studies. We will actively encourage and support you in pursuing your interests to a higher level, whether intermediate, advanced or degree.

I hated school, so why should I like college?

The opportunity to learn now extends far beyond college to embrace study at home, the workplace and in your local community. If you have been holding back from returning to study, perhaps through less than rosy memories of school, then it is important to realise that things are now very different now. Classes are held anywhere from the adult education centre to schools, community centres and libraries. Whether 'in' or 'out' of college, the emphasis is always on interactive, informal and supportive lessons with a mutually respectful tutor/student relationship.
