National Union of Students

National Union of Students

Every student has the opportunity to affiliate to the National Union of Students and take advantage of NUS benefits including discounts on travel, leisure and books. You can also become actively involved in NUS activities such as student representation and student communication.

NUS is one of the largest student organisations in the world and represents the interests of around five million students in further and higher education throughout the United Kingdom. NUS provides research, representation, training and expert advice for individual students and students' unions. We deal with over 15,000 welfare enquiries each year and train over 3,000 students' union officers.

Our core values which we believe in are...

Equality We believe there should be equality of opportunity for everyone to participate fully in a society that celebrates diversity.

Democracy Our policies and priorities must be student-led and students’ union-focused through building open, transparent and accessible democratic structures.

Collectivism Students and students’ unions are more effective when they organise together locally, nationally and internationally: unity is our strength.

An overview of what NUS does

NUS democracy NUS is governed by NUS National Conference, an annual meeting of all constituent member unions to decide policy for the forthcoming year and to elect the new National President and members of the National Executive Committee. NUS Scotland, NUS Wales/ UCMC and NUS-USI in Northern Ireland organise their own conferences and elect their own executives, as well as having representatives on the National Executive Committee.

National Executive Committee The National Executive Committee is made up of 26 representatives who are elected at National Conference or at liberation campaign conferences. Guided by the constitution they implement the policy and objectives of NUS and direct the work of NUS staff.

NUS Campaigns NUS has a well-deserved reputation for high profile campaigning that reflects the issues and concerns of all students. Working together with students and students' unions NUS develops strategic campaign actions and produces support materials including briefings and publicity materials. Recent campaign activities have included lobbies of parliament, demonstrations, and creation of interactive campaign materials for the NUS website - nusonline.co.uk

NUS Research NUS employs a team of researchers who each specialise in a different area of education or student life, from housing to further education, student funding to women's issues. Special projects on accommodation costs and student health, NUS submissions to Government inquiries and to other education organisations, as well as case work advising individual students and students' unions, make up much of the work of the Research Unit

NUS Press and Public Affairs The Press and Public Affairs Department promotes NUS messages to the media, parliament and the public. Each year they respond to over 5,000 enquiries, work with national TV, radio and press and network with over 140 MPs, ministers and civil servants. The Department is also responsible for servicing the needs of student media by issuing press passes, organising the national media conference and running the Student Media Awards.

NUS legal advice The NUS legal section provides free legal advice for students' unions on a wide range of issues including constitutional and charity law issues, elections, employment and contracts of all sorts. The legal section also advise individual students, through their students' union, on academic appeals and other issues with their educational institutions.
