BSc (Hons) in Medical Sciences (Foundation Entry)
The aim of our programme is to help you further develop and enhance the key skills required to become an outstanding Medical Scientist. It is a ‘gateway’ course to prepare you to become a highly competitive candidate for graduate entry medicine, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, Physician Associate or other professional programmes.
We will focus on scientific knowledge, maths and communication skills as well as ensuring that you gain all the experience necessary to excel in your medical career.

- Biological and Chemical Systems learn more about the chemical reactions and processes that take place within our bodies.

Our typical offer is 80 UCAS Points. We operate a flexible admissions policy and treat everyone as an individual. This means that we will take into consideration your educational achievements and predicted grades (where applicable) together with your application as a whole, a pre-course interview, any relevant work experience and personal statement.
BTEC Extended Diploma:
Merit, Merit, Pass
BTEC Diploma: Distinction, Merit
Pass Access Course: 80 UCAS Points
IELTS: 6.0 or 7.0 if you wish to progress to MBBS/MPAS
GCSE: 5 at grade C/4 including Maths & English or equivalent
Please note: Before an offer will be made, all students will be expected to attend and pass a pre-course interview and assessment tasks.
- How will I be assessed?
Assessment will include reports, presentations, case studies, assignments and examinations that will demonstrate an understanding of the skills learned during taught and practical sessions.
- Progression Pathway
This one year course offers a foundation stage for subsequent progression to the 2 year accelerated Medical Sciences degree with the possibility of also applying to progress to UCLan’s Medicine (MBBS) programme*/**, integrated Masters in Physician Associate Studies, MPharm (Hons)**, Biomedical Sciences and Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy*** programmes after the foundation year. UK students who progress onto the Medical Sciences degree will be taught at the UCLan Burnley, Victoria Mill Campus.
*The School of Medicine wishes to increase access to medical education and support the development and sustainability of regional workforce. From 2019, the MBBS is open to international students and limited number of UK students and so competition for progression to this programme is very high. Weighting will be given to UK Widening Participation students wishing to apply for MBBS.
