Harriet Williamson, current weekend editor for ‘Pink News’ and former Commissioning editor for ‘The Independent’, delivered an engaging and informative ‘Introduction to Journalism’ session to over 70 English Language students.

Harriet has written for and been published in The Independent, Vogue UK, Cosmopolitan, The Guardian and The Sunday Times. Harriet’s writing has even been featured in the Netflix documentary ‘Seaspiracy’!

Harriet’s introduction of recent newspaper articles about the ‘Just Stop Oil’ campaign led to some excellent analysis from our students; furthermore, perceptive points were made more generally about bias and the need to adopt a critical reading of texts. Harriet’s message about how journalism can be and is a force for positive change in society was truly inspiring.

Students also engaged in the more light-hearted side of journalism, writing some fantastic headlines about rapper Ice Spice’s bad attempt at making scrambled eggs!

English Language and Literature at Runshaw is a stimulating and varied subject. It is an excellent choice for students who have enjoyed both areas of English at GCSE level and are just as interested in nonfiction and non-literary writing as they are in great plays and novels.
