Level 1 Events, Tourism & Catering

On this course you will study a variety of practical topics that develop skills in many aspects such as problem solving, communication, working on your own and in a team, organisation and prioritising, researching, relating to difficult situations, culinary skills and customer service. Students will hold their own events, allowing them to show off their unique characters whilst raising money for selected charities and progressing in skills learned on the course.

There will be opportunities to create interesting recipes which will improve English and maths skills, whilst having hands on fun in one of our highly resourced kitchens. Researching tourist destinations in our local area will enable you to get off site and experience learning in a real life situation, then apply that experience and knowledge ready for assessment. This course prepares the young learner for progression on to many differing Level 2 courses or apprenticeships.

  • Overview

    You will study a wide range of subjects which are interesting, fun and will enable you to really excel in both academic and practical abilities. The course will help you develop a range of employability skills such as professionalism; leadership; research skills; teamwork and social awareness, and as part of the course you will also study English and Maths.

    What will I learn?

    This one year course is designed to focus on the diverse tourism and hospitality industry by developing tourism knowledge and chef skills and providing students with transferable skills. It is delivered by enthusiastic professionals. Students will learn in excellent facilities such as the industrial kitchen and mock aircraft. This practical course will cover a variety of units including:

    • Basic food preparation & cooking
    • The UK Tourism Industry
    • Serving food and drink
    • Planning a trip to a visitor attraction
    • Organising an event.

    You will be required to purchase a uniform, and will be assessed by the production of a portfolio of evidence, which will be verified and monitored.

  • Entry Requirements

    For our Pre-Advanced Level 1 courses the entry requirements are 1 x GCSE at Grade 3, 1 x GCSE at Grade 2 & Maths or English Language at Grade 2 and Grade 1 in the other.

    Some courses and subjects will have additional specific entry requirements or require DBS clearance to undertake placements. Information about this can be found on the Apply Portal, and on your offer letter which you will receive after your interview.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment takes place through coursework, practical activities and continual assessment throughout the year.

  • Progression Pathway

    Once you have successfully completed this course you may be able to progress in college to any level 2 vocational programme or onto employment in a range of different areas.
