We offer short, flexible FREE Basic Skills Maths and English courses, starting in April on Wednesday & Thursday mornings. 

Delivered in a friendly and supportive environment there are many reasons people come back to learning as an adult.  You may need it for your job or training – or perhaps you just want to prove to yourself you can do it! Better still, *if you do not currently hold A*-C (Grade 9-4) or equivalent, then your course will be free!

  • What Are Functional Skills?

    These qualifications are for you if you didn’t sit or achieve maths and English qualifications at school.

    Functional Skills are skills-based qualifications and offer students the skills to use English and maths in everyday situations.

  • What is Entry Level?

    This is the level to start at if you are thinking about getting a maths or English basic qualification or want to build up to a higher-level qualification.

    It is a great stepping stone for adults who learn better with practical, real-life examples.

  • When are the Classes?

    English – starting April 20th 9.30 – 12.30

    Maths – starting April 21st 9.30 – 12.30

  • What are the Benefits of doing this Course?

    Functional Skills is for you if you didn’t achieve the GCSEs you wanted at school, but now wish to develop essential skills to help you in life and/or work.

    They are great for increasing your confidence and can help boost your employability.

  • Will this Course Help my Job Prospects?

    Yes! Many employers require applicants to have a maths or English qualification.  Functional Skills are well-recognised by employers and are widely accepted in place of GCSEs.

    Taking a functional skills course show that you can solve problems and understand real-life situations. Employers are looking for these skills when recruiting for positions.

  • I Hated Maths and English at School – How are Functional Skills Different?

    Functional Skills qualifications are taught completely differently from school!

    You are in a small group of people of all ages and you are taught about skills that you will actually use in life and in the workplace. There will be no algebra or poetry!

  • What will this Qualification lead to?

    You can go on the Level 1 and Level 2.

  • Do Universities and Employers accept Functional Skills?

    Almost all employers accept this qualification.

    Most universities accept Functional Skills, but please check with the University you are thinking of applying to, to ensure they accept Functional Skills.

  • What is the Difference between Functional Skills and GCSEs?

    Functional Skills are recognised GCSE alternative qualifications.

    Level 1 is equivalent to is equivalent to a GCSE grade 1 to 3 (D to G).

    Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (C)

    Entry Level 3 is equivalent to a GCSE grade 1 (G)

    Functional Skills are skills-based qualifications. GCSEs are academic qualifications which give learners more theoretical knowledge.

  • How is the Course Delivered?

    The course is delivered in the classroom at our Euxton Lane Campus.

  • Who can Take this Course?

    This course is FREE if you are aged 19 years or over. You can be employed or unemployed. If you are unemployed, it will not affect your benefits.

    You also need to be a UK national or have right of abode or an EEA national in the UK, who has been resident for at least the previous three years.
