Runshaw’s success stories continue as we head into Apprenticeship Week

Matthew Young is one of our current apprentices working in the café and restaurant at Birkacre Garden Centre, Chorley. He is studying for the Level 2 Hospitality Team Member – Food production qualification. Matt started working at Birkacre Garden Centre at just 16, as a pot washer, but quickly developed an interest and passion for food. This newly found passion motivated him to pursue a career as a chef. Birkacre Garden Centre then hired Matt as an Apprentice Chef, in partnership with Runshaw College. During the Apprenticeship, Matt has been able to learn the fundamentals of food production and cooking from experienced staff, whilst having the structure of completing a qualification with practical experience. Matt recommends an Apprenticeship to anybody who enjoys learning on the go, whilst getting paid, he states; “My apprenticeship has given me focus to learn in a practical way”.
