The first week back after Christmas saw the School of Public Services host a ‘Meet the Services’ Week.

The week was arranged to help upskill and enhance our students’ employability skills that can be recognised by both universities and employers. A wide range of employers visited the college to deliver talks about employment within the services, which included entry requirements, along with different routes into the services. The week helped students recognising the ethics and values which underpin the majority of the public services. The services included:

  • Lancashire Victim Services
  • Dog handler British Transport Police
  • Royal Engineer Geographic Technician Army
  • Senior Social Worker for County Prison Team
  • Probation Officer
  • Neighbourhood Policing
  • Workforce Representation Team
  • Northwest Air Ambulance
  • Director of Communities Local Authority (Crime Reduction)
  • Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service
  • Ex Prison Officer

That’s a whopping 9 different Public Services! The week was also beneficial to gain feedback from local employers to help us form our curriculum intent. It has also opened up 3 new exciting opportunities for our department to work with different services and enhance students’ CVs.

The Public Service students also spent some time during the week fundraising for Derian house. This was planned in response from feedback from Lancashire Chief Constable who have said that new recruits are lacking empathy. The students have learned about Derian House and the fantastic work they do. They have raised over £300!
