A2 physics students recently took part in interactive demonstrations of Quantum physics, courtesy of Phil Furneaux, Honorary Teaching Fellow Lancaster University, Physics Network Coordinator and STEM Quantum Technology Programme ambassador.

Research is underway at Lancaster University to apply quantum physics to the development of secure communications. Quantum key distribution QKD uses a rule imposed by quantum mechanics; that certain measurements can’t be made without disturbing the system being measured. If a communication channel is set up correctly, eavesdropping attempts can be detected, guaranteeing the security of the system.

Our students developed their own knowledge of quantum physics from their first year study and were interested to hear about this cutting edge research. Phil commented afterwards, “As always, I really enjoyed my visit to Runshaw College. It is an inspiring place and a credit to our state education system. I really enjoyed the students’ attentiveness and positive approach”.
