On Wednesday 15th June, 10 Biology students attended the Biology Olympiad at Edge Hill University.

They had 4 different challenges to complete within the laboratories, including extracting DNA from a kiwi, analysis of tissues using a microscope, completing a Maths challenge to work out the surface area of pineapple leaves to consider water loss, and finally carrying out species and taxonomy naming of insects using microscopes.

Our two Runshaw teams did amazing, placing 4th and 7th out of 17 groups. We also got a tour of the campus to see the Edge Hill ‘beach’ and new laboratories containing the very large transmission electron and scanning electron microscopes, which was fantastic for students to use. Well done team Runshaw!
