Year 1 physics students have been offered an exciting opportunity to work with researchers at Lancaster University.

From a very strong field of applications, two groups of students have been selected to work towards a Gold Crest award. They will be spending half term week at Lancaster University looking into their chosen projects.

Team 1 will be looking at high-energy particle physics at the ATLAS Experiment. This involves using a visualisation tool to scan through computer simulated beam collisions and studying some key properties of fundamental particles and their interactions.

Team 2 are working on designing the next generation of neutrino detectors and face the challenge of designing an experiment to study reactor neutrinos. Neutrinos are notoriously difficult to detect due to having no charge and being virtually massless. They can pass through materials without leaving a trace!

The projects will culminate in a team presentation at Lancaster University this summer.
