On Thursday 4th May, an incredibly talented team of footballers headed to Accrington Stanley FC to compete in the final of the National Cup – and what a day it turned into.

Our girls on the Women’s Football Team have had an incredible season, accumulating in the ultimate game – the AoC Sport National Cup Final at Accrington Stanley FC. Their opponents – a tough, resilient and competitive team – the Women’s Football Academy from Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College.

The day started off with a pre-match lunch in Runshaw’s Blue Room. To prepare them for the big match, our amazing Runshaw Chef School students prepared them a delicious feast, making sure they were full of energy ahead of the match.

The team then travelled to Accrington Stanley FC, where they eagerly awaited the 2pm kick off. Tensions were high, and as the team began warming up, good luck messages soon started flooding in to social media – including – a certain England Manager. His name? Gareth Southgate. A big thanks to Gareth for a lovely message to our girls, which can be viewed below.

Kick off. 2pm. The match starts, and in a little over 90 minutes, Runshaw Women’s Football team will be picking up the trophy. First half, a cracking first goal from Team Captain Leah Monk, the perfect start.

As the second half began, could we see another rush of adrenaline kick in? This was quickly answered, as another two goals swept past the opposition, courtesy of Niamh Rutherford and Aaliyah Turner. They think it’s all over? It is now. The final whistle sounds and Runshaw is victorious, winning 3 – 0! Goal keeper and player of the match goes to Tanya Nash, lifting the ECFA Women’s Knockout Cup trophy!

What a game. What a performance. What a fantastic end to the season. These girls are talented. We are so proud to have watched them flourish in style. You haven’t seen the last of them yet. I’m sure you’ll agree they will go on to greater achievements after their time here at Runshaw. They think it’s all over? Not a chance.
