We recently celebrated the outstanding success of the 2024 Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad!
Going beyond the A Level specification, this paper requires our students to apply their understanding of Chemistry to real-world situations and concepts and challenges their problem-solving skills to their limits. This year saw a record-breaking 22 entries, with all students receiving awards: 7 Bronze, 9 Silver and an impressive 6 Gold awards (equating to the top 8% in the country). These achievements demonstrate not only the remarkable talent but also the dedication of our participants, resulting in an unprecedented level of success. Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and commitment!
We would also like to send out a heartfelt thank you to this year’s A Level Chemistry Peer Mentors! 25 second year students dedicated themselves to mentoring their younger peers who are currently in their first year here. They selflessly shared their knowledge on course content, exam questions and revision strategies, giving up their free time to support students. Their commitment and guidance have undoubtedly made a lasting impact, inspiring the next generation of chemists. Thank you for your dedication, kindness, and invaluable support.
To round off a successful couple of weeks, our A Level Chemists embarked on an exciting journey to Manchester Metropolitan University’s undergraduate labs. Under the guidance of Senior Lecturer Dr. Ryan Mewis, they synthesised aspirin, learning essential lab skills including reflux; vacuum filtration and recrystallisation, then analysed their product using FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. This immersive day not only deepened their understanding but also sparked their passion for Chemistry. Many thanks to Dr. Ryan Mewis and Manchester Metropolitan University for making this experience possible.
