A Level Engineering
Design Engineering is an inspiring subject that applies rigorous mathematics as well as scientific and practical skills within the subject.
- Course Information
Within Design Engineering you will work with principles and concepts that will develop your skills as a budding engineer to progress to Higher Education or industry, ensuring that the direction of your learning supports progression beyond A Level. There is a focus on ensuring the content you will cover reflects authentic practice, giving an insight into the way that creative, engineering and/ or manufacturing industries function. This will be achieved through the application of mathematical and scientific knowledge, understanding and skills that reflect the importance of Design Engineering as a pivotal STEM subject.
Facilities in the School are world class and include our Science and Engineering Innovation Centre at our Chorley Campus. Together with our workshop at Langdale Road we boast dedicated IT rooms with Industry standard software, rapid prototyping machines, dedicated electronics, mechanics, materials testing lab, a world class mechanical engineering workshop with state of the art machinery and equipment.
As well as studies within the college, enrichment is a key part of the course and being able to take part in trips to Europe, alongside company visits to the likes of JCB, Jaguar, Leyland Trucks and TRM packaging, gives our students a fantastic industry insight. To complement studies further, we invite speakers on site at college, and students can hear from industry giants including Rolls Royce, HE Alumni, and the RAF.
Destinations for leavers from the school include careers with BAE, BNFL and the Armed Forces or moving on to higher level study at Liverpool John Moores, Loughborough, Leeds, Newcastle and Manchester. We also offer progression on to our Runshaw University Courses.

- Entry Requirements
For our A Level programme our entry requirements are a minimum of 5x Grade 5.
*Please note that the following A Level subject requires a Level 6 in GCSE English: English.
*Please note that the following A Level subjects require a Level 6 in GCSE Maths: Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology.
- Progression Pathway
You could progress onto our Engineering Apprenticeships in the future after completion of this course.
